When Traditional Learning Gets in the Way

During my years of teaching there would be a similar pattern with students. They'd come into lessons excited to learn drums, but after a few weeks they'd start to lose confidence. Not because they lacked ability, but because they were struggling with the way they were being asked to learn.

Traditional notation is a fantastic skill and has its place in music education. I've taught it for years and still encourage students to learn it when they're ready. The problem is that for some people, being presented with a page full of unfamiliar symbols can feel overwhelming before they've even had a chance to enjoy playing.

I've worked with students who have ADHD, dyslexia, autism, learning difficulties, and students who simply learn better by seeing and doing rather than reading. I struggled with traditional learning when I was at school and, to be honest, have continued to do so throughout my adult life. So I totally get it.

Students would often get frustrated and that would then lead to them feeling like they 'weren't good enough' or that drumming 'wasn't for them' purely down to the frustrations around learning notation. Many of these students could keep a steady beat, copy rhythms, remember patterns and play grooves perfectly well. They just weren't connecting with the way the information was being presented.

That's what led me to create Drum Easy. I wanted to build something that removed those early barriers and allowed students to focus on what made them want to learn drums in the first place — playing drums.

The GrooveCode™ system uses simple visual patterns to help students understand rhythm and coordination without becoming overwhelmed. It gives beginners a way to build confidence, develop timing, and start making music quickly.

Most importantly, it proves something I've believed for a long time:

Struggling with traditional notation doesn't mean you can't learn drums.

Sometimes it simply means you need a different route to get there.
